Director of Racquet Sports
Tom played junior tennis in the New England section of the USTA where he earning rankings as high as four. He attended High Point University in NC, where he earned all district and all conference honors for two years. He was seeded ninth in the National NAIA College Doubles tournament and twice finished in the top 10 of the NAIA Nationals with his team.
During the summers, he worked as an assistant at the Century Club in Purchase, NY, where he taught nationally-ranked juniors and played and practiced with members of the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team. During the winters, for 17 years he worked at the New Canaan Racquet Club, 10 years as the Director. For 13 years, the club hosted the Merrill Lynch & Union Trust Tennis Classic, which at the time was the largest attended legends event in the country. Over the 13 years of the event, he had the opportunity to play, teach and practice with the likes of Ken Rosewall, Rod Lavor, John Newcomb, Stan Smith and more.
In 1997, he moved to Wilmington, NC, to work for Cliff Drysdale as the director of the Drysdale Sports Center at the Land Fall Club. There he was the tournament director for the Alltel Legends Classic. The event was able to donate over $20,000 to local charities. While in Wilmington, he also was a TV announcer for tennis on WWAY TV3. He has been at SVCC since the year 2000.
